The cockle (Cerastoderma edule) is a bivalve mollusk common in the coastal waters of the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
The cockle has a rounded, flat shell, usually about 3 to 5 centimeters long, although it can grow up to 10 centimeters. The shell is generally brown or gray, with fine, concentric stripes.
The cockle lives buried in sand or mud, in shallow water areas. It feeds on food particles that it filters from the water through its gills.
It is a food appreciated in many cuisines, being used in dishes such as soups, rice, paellas and stews. It can also be consumed raw, like shellfish. Cockles are a rich source of protein, vitamins and minerals, and are considered a healthy food.
